The Howey Mansion
Nestled in the rolling hills of central Florida, the Howey Mansion is a breathtaking architectural gem and the crown jewel of Howey-in-the-Hills. Built in 1925 at 1001 Citrus Avenue as the grand residence of William J. Howey—the visionary founder of the town—this 7,188-square-foot, 20-room Mediterranean Revival masterpiece was designed by pioneering architect Katharine Cotheal Budd.
Howey, a citrus magnate and land promoter who acquired 60,000 acres in Lake County in 1916, envisioned the area as a thriving empire centered on groves and commerce. He and his wife, Mary Hastings Howey, moved into the completed estate by the end of 1925, transforming it into a showplace on 15 acres of lush grounds known as “The Park.” Features include rose-stucco walls draped in creeping fig, a striking red Spanish-tile roof, wrought-iron accents, arched windows, pecky cypress woodwork, Florentine marble, a grand curving stairway, fireplaces, a tower breakfast room with a dumbwaiter, and even a hidden Prohibition-era vault in the library. The property also encompasses a guesthouse with garage and a Georgian marble mausoleum where the Howey family rests.
The mansion hosted lavish events, from an open-air concert by the New York Civic Opera Company that drew 16,000 guests in 1927 to visits by dignitaries and even President Calvin Coolidge. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, it later fell into disrepair and abandonment for nearly a decade until 2017, when the Cowherd family purchased and meticulously restored it to its original splendor.
Today, the Howey Mansion thrives once more as a premier historic wedding and event venue, welcoming guests for intimate ceremonies or grand celebrations amid its timeless elegance. Historic tours are also available, offering a captivating glimpse into early 20th-century Florida grandeur.
